Fabulous Flute Encores!

After your blockbuster recital, you might want to cap it off with a beautiful encore — these are absolutely perfect!

Paul Taffanel: Allegretto Grazioso & Allegretto Scherzando for Flute and Piano

These pieces were written as sightreading exercises and they don’t come much better than this! The Allegretto Grazioso sees Taffanel use all the colours of the flute, ebbing and flowing like a feather in the wind. The Allegretto Scherzando is a more dramatic affair with stronger rhythms and more pronounced dynamics. The change of key to the major is magical. These stunning pieces are always great to hear and they both work really well as encores. More than highly recommended! Difficulty Guide: 6-7

Richard Walthew: Idyll for Flute and Piano

This lovely Idyll by the little-known English composer Richard H Walthew is so beautiful. The flowing melody, subtle changes of key, short cadenza passage and atmospheric ending are woven into an appealing rhapsody, all  held together by the  simple accompaniment. This is five minutes of pure delight for both player and audience. Difficulty Guide: 7

Andy Scott: Respectfully Yours for Flute and Piano

This a great piece. A beautiful opening melody becomes freely embellished and the skill is to translate the complexity of the rhythms into the improvisational Andy Scott style. The piece really weaves its magic and is simply a gem! Difficulty Guide: 7

Maria Theresia von Paradis: Sicilienne for Flute and Piano

Maria von Paradise was a contemporary of Mozart and this all-too-brief piece has the simple structure of its time. The melody is utterly charming, the harmony totally classical and it just all works very well. It’s always good to hear music as lovely as this and it is particularly good as a encore, especially if you have ended your recital proper with a blockbuster! Difficulty Guide: 5

Amanda Fox: In the Clouds for Flute and Piano

This beautiful piece by Amanda Fox, the writer of beautiful tunes. Written in memory of her father, it combines a flowing accompaniment with a soaring melody that is both captivating and very moving. An absolute winner! Difficulty Guide: 6
