Five works for flute by influential black composers.

Black History Month is a perfect opportunity to shine a spotlight on the pioneering contributions of black composers to flute repertoire. These are all wonderful pieces and absolute winners!

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges edited by Matt Johnson: Sonata No 1 in B flat Major Op 1a for flute and piano

This two movement work by the little-known black Baroque composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, is utterly charming. The first movement is elegant with simple phrasing and nimble passagework. The minuet is stronger in outlook with a minor key trio section that has a wistful gentleness. Matt Johnson’s transcription works very well and the whole work is just delightful! Difficulty Guide: 6-7

Scott Joplin: Four Joplin Rags arranged for Two Flutes and Piano by David Gilliland

The rags of Scott Joplin never fail to please and here are four of the best. The flutes work in close harmony throughout and the piano now simply holds the pieces together with that familiar off beat rhythm. Each one would stand alone and make a crowd-please of an encore. Easy listening at its best! Difficulty Guide: 5-7

Ulysses Kay: Prelude for Unaccompanied Flute

This is a haunting piece for solo flute which, although looking simple on the page, is full subtle inflections and changing colours to challenge the performer. The slow minim speed enables the long phrases and angular intervals of the flute line to weave an almost hypnotic spell which is timeless. The result is a very effective piece of solo flute writing that is very satisfying to play. Difficulty Guide: 9

H. Leslie Adams: Danza di Tre Bambole (Dance of the Three Dolls) for Flute, Piccolo and Piano

This is a lovely piece which really does sound like dolls dancing! The flute takes the main lines supported by a flowing piano accompaniment and colourful interjections from the piccolo. The repetitive nature of the dance theme makes the whole piece really work its fairy-like magic as the dolls almost seem to float. Well within the scope of three good students, this would make a great end-of-year concert winner. Difficulty Guide: 7-8

Valerie Coleman: Danza de la Mariposa for Solo Flute

Valerie Coleman writes beautifully for the flute which this exciting piece illustrates perfectly. Butterflies dance in a flurry of notes, each one more elaborate than the last, creating a whirl of sound. The lament is calm and expressive, making an effective contrast. This is an imaginative and challenging workout for solo flute – perfect! Difficulty Guide: 9
